Surrey Square Primary School

Primary School, Two-form entry School, Surrey Square is part of the Big Education Trust

Approach overview

At Surrey Square ‘more than a school’ means we work together from the core, equipping our community to thrive and to build a better world for themselves and others.

For us, high attainment in core skills is a pre-requisite for success in secondary school, and beyond. However, just as important are the other skills – the ability to ‘self-manage’, to communicate clearly with others, to know who you are and to have ambition. We actively teach our pupils these skills, seeing the core values  – Responsibility, Respect, Enjoyment, Community, Perseverance and Compassion – as the framework. Along with well being, these values are the backbone of the school, shaping our curriculum and pedagogy, and guiding our behaviors. We passionately believe that the circumstances of birth should not be the key determining factor in success in life and are immensely proud that ALL children achieve well at Surrey Square, regardless of their socio-economic, ethnic or gender status.

Why we joined the Next Big 10

The Next Big 10 provides challenge, inspiration and support; giving us the opportunity to work alongside other schools who share our commitment to developing an offer for pupils that is more fit for purpose.
Matt Morden, Co-Headteacher
Working as a part of the Next Big 10 network gives us the time and space we need to think strategically and to collaborate with others that are wanting to ‘do things differently’ in schools.
