Wyborne Primary School

Local Authority Maintained Primary School with Nursery

Approach overview

Wyborne Primary School is a proud, successful, and inclusive school that welcomes children from diverse backgrounds and abilities, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive. Our school values—Empathy, Empowerment, Curiosity, Collaboration, and Champion—are central to our ethos and shape the way we support our childrens’ holistic development:

Empathy: We encourage the children to understand and share the feelings of others, promoting kindness, respect, and compassion throughout our school community. This is reflected in our emphasis on mutual respect and teamwork, where children learn to appreciate different perspectives and work harmoniously.

Empowerment: We aim to empower the children by giving them the confidence and tools to take ownership of their learning and personal growth. Through democratic practices like Pupil Governors and encouraging student voice, we ensure the children feel valued and have the power to influence their educational journey.

Curiosity: Wyborne fosters a love of learning through a curriculum that stimulates curiosity and encourages the children to explore and question the world around them. This approach ensures that the children not only gain knowledge but also develop a deeper understanding across various subjects, preparing them for lifelong learning.

Collaboration: Collaboration is at the heart of how we operate as a school community. Whether in the classroom, during sports, or in extracurricular activities, we emphasise teamwork and cooperative learning. This strengthens the childrens’ ability to communicate effectively and work together towards shared goals.

Champion: We champion every child, ensuring that each one feels supported and celebrated for their unique abilities and contributions. This is reflected in our inclusive approach to education, where children of all abilities and backgrounds are encouraged to achieve their full potential, both academically and personally..

These values are embedded in every aspect of school life at Wyborne, guiding our mission to create confident, compassionate, and empowered individuals who are prepared to make positive contributions to society.

Why we joined the Next Big 10

Working in Education, you are always learning, growing and evolving your practice. Early in your career, you are taught the plan/do/review cycle, and it never ends. It is important to us as a school that we avoid silo thinking and collaborate with other forward-thinking schools to be education pioneers. Having been on the Big 8 - Empowering Leadership Training, I knew that joining the rethinking school programme would provide us with opportunities to work with like-minded colleagues and discover new and exciting practices to inform the work we are doing as part of our strategic school improvement plan.
Robyn Heath, Deputy Headteacher
We admire Big Education and the work that is happening. We are forward thinking too! We want to learn from others and collaborate with schools and educationalists that are also innovative and not afraid to try new things and take risks.
