Rethinking Leadership Through Curriculum Innovation

Director of Education

Three Spires Trust

In an era marked by rapid technological advancements, evolving societal expectations, and shifts in educational policy, reimagining leadership in schools is more crucial than ever. At Three Spires, we advocate for a forward-thinking vision of educational leadership that transcends conventional frameworks. Our approach is comprehensive, integrated, and developmental, emphasising that leadership involves more than fostering growth within our academies. It focuses on nurturing leaders and improving the educational environment. This blog explores our guiding principles, initiatives, and the outcomes from our recent curriculum review roundtable. The event empowered our leaders to share insights and shape a dynamic, inclusive educational future.

At Three Spires, our leadership model promotes collaboration among professionals committed to holistic school governance. We focus on both the operational aspects of running an academy and nurturing a culture of self-improvement, academy-wide development, and innovation. Achieving this requires structured opportunities for our leaders to engage in meaningful discussions, reflective practice, and open expression of ideas.

Facilitating Meaningful Dialogue

During our recent curriculum review roundtable, we dedicated time for leaders to engage in open dialogues and free writing exercises. This dedicated time fostered an environment conducive to articulating thoughts and perspectives, encouraging participants to take ownership of their contributions. Capturing key insights from these discussions was a shared responsibility, with note-takers recording all viewpoints for analysis and reflection.

The roundtable served as a platform for leaders to document their thoughts, promoting deeper engagement with their ideas. By allowing time for individual reflection, we empower leaders to clarify their arguments and foster thoughtful exchange over reactive debate. This process improves discussions and helps leaders develop a deeper understanding of the complexities in educational leadership.

leadership meeting with teaching professionals

Our recent gathering was a vibrant, solutions-oriented event where leaders from academies of all sizes shared insights, addressed challenges, and discussed strategies to enhance our curriculum and meet the diverse needs of today’s learners. Centred on key themes from the Curriculum and Assessment Review Group, discussions encompassed vital areas such as excellence in literacy and numeracy, the significance of arts and vocational subjects, post-16 qualification pathways, and the crucial role of diversity and representation in the curriculum.

In response to Becky Francis's call for insights into the evolving role of school leaders amidst curriculum innovation, our discussions were timely. Her focus on the need for leaders to adapt and reimagine their approaches aligns with our objectives at Three Spires. By tapping into the collective knowledge of our leaders, we create a rich tapestry of ideas and strategies that address Francis’s observations and strengthen our educational framework, making it both robust and future-focused.

Impactful Insights and Future Focused Policies

We compiled the insights from the roundtable discussions into a comprehensive response paper to inform our internal policies and share with national policymakers, amplifying our impact. This dissemination of insights reflects our commitment to actively contributing to the national educational discourse.

Embodying Gandhi’s belief to "be the change you wish to see," we recognise that effective leadership requires self-reflection and inclusivity. At Three Spires, we foster an environment where every voice is valued, and listening happens without judgment. This approach fosters a collaborative culture that promotes psychological safety, enabling staff to take risks and engage in creative problem-solving.

As we move forward, the insights from the roundtable will refine our educational practices, nurturing the head (academic excellence), heart (character and wellbeing), and hand (creativity and problem-solving) in all students. Our commitment to ongoing dialogue ensures that our leadership remains dynamic and responsive to the ever-evolving educational landscape.
